Stump Grinding & Removal in Fayetteville, AR

Commercial-grade grinding 6–18 inches below grade with full chip cleanup.

A leftover stump is a tripping hazard, a termite invitation, a mowing obstacle, and an eyesore. Grinding it out is the cleanest, fastest, and most affordable way to reclaim the space — and the only method that stops the stump from sprouting again. Ozark Tree Experts operates Vermeer and Carlton stump grinders ranging from 27HP walk-behinds for tight gates to 84HP self-propelled machines for industrial work. Whether you have one small dogwood stump in a Fayetteville flower bed or a half-acre of pine stumps on a Benton County build site, we grind them out clean.

How Deep We Grind

Standard residential grinding takes the stump down 6–8 inches below grade — sufficient for re-sodding, planting flower beds, mulching, or replanting a new tree nearby. For new construction, footings, or driveway extensions we grind to 12–18 inches. Surface roots are chased and ground out to the edge of the canopy drip line when access allows, eliminating future heaving and trip hazards. We probe the area first for irrigation lines, gas service, low-voltage wiring, and septic components, and we always recommend calling Arkansas 811 (free, 48 hours notice) for utility location on larger grinds.

What Happens to the Chips

Stump grinding produces a large volume of wood chip mulch — usually two to four times the volume of the original stump. By default we rake the chips into the hole, top with the remaining material, and leave a slightly mounded surface that will settle over a few weeks. If you would rather we haul the chips off-site we do that for a small additional fee. Many homeowners ask us to spread chips in landscape beds as free mulch — we are happy to do that anywhere on your property.

Replanting After Grinding

If you plan to replant in the same spot, wait 6–12 months for the remaining wood chips and root mass to decompose. Replanting immediately into a fresh grind site causes nitrogen lockout (decomposing wood pulls nitrogen from the soil) and poor establishment. A better strategy is to plant the replacement tree 6–10 feet away from the original stump location, where soil structure is undisturbed. We can recommend Ozark-native replacement species and provide planting referrals.
